Q. What determines if the DANGEROUS notation is printed versus other notations on the Hazardous Material Shipping Order?
A. Rules have been incorporated to allow the use of the DANGEROUS notation for DOT hazardous materials on shipping papers generated through Agvance. For any single shipping paper, Agvance must determine the following:
- If bulk packages are on the shipment, exclude them from the use of the DANGEROUS placard;
- For non-bulk packages, if 2 or more Hazard Classes are on the shipment, determine if the aggregate weight is greater than 1,001 lbs;
- No single Hazard Class in non-bulk packages can total 2,205lbs or more on the shipment for the DANGEROUS placard to be used. Consolidated Loads must be updated at each delivery stop so the driver knows when the DANGEROUS placard should be displayed and when the placard must be changed to a specific Hazard Class placard.
The Standard placarding rules have been enhanced to take into account when the DANGEROUS placard can be used and replace the multitude of individual placards for non-bulk items when the weight of a single Hazard Class does not exceed 2,205 lbs when there are 2 or more classes as part of the shipment. This functionality is in place for the Delivery Ticket, Blend Ticket, Invoice, Purchase Receipt, and Print Less Than Truckload Paperwork. A chemical database interface is not required for this functionality, however, it makes the process more efficient as the shipping name and placard information does not have to be manually entered.
Note: DOT says the DANGEROUS placard can be used as long as two or more Hazard Classes have an aggregate gross weight greater than 1,001 lbs. However, if there are over 2,205 lbs of any single Hazard Class in the mixed load, the specific class placard needs to be displayed.

The following items/pack sizes, may be displayed together as DANGEROUS:
- 144 Gal (4x1 gal Jugs) Warrior II (1,318 lbs.) with a Hazard Class of 6.1, Placard of Poison, UN/NA ID 3352
- 60 Gal (15 gal Jugs) Warrior II (549 lbs.) with a Hazard Class of 6.1, Placard of Poison, UN/NA ID 3352
- 50 gallons of gasoline with a Hazard Class of 3
Example 2:
The following must be displayed separately as 6.1 and 8 because it is greater than 2,205 lbs of a single Hazard Class.
- 192 Gal (4 x 1 gal Jugs) Warrior II (1,756.8 lbs.) with a Hazard Class of 6.1, Placard of Poison, UN/NA ID: 3352
- 60 Gal (15 gal Jugs) Warrior II (549 lbs.) with a Hazard Class of 6.1, Placard of Poison, UN/NA ID: 3352
- 180 Gal (2.5 gal Jugs) Ethephon 2 SL (1652.4 lbs.) with a Hazard Class of 8, Placard of Corrosive, UN/NA ID: 3265
